Margaret Cho recently revealed she turned down a role in the series Heated Rivalry due to concerns about being detained at the Canadian border because of her vocal criticism of the Trump administration.
Podcast Revelation
During an appearance on the I Never Liked You podcast, the Emmy-nominated comedian and actress explained her decision. “Last year, I got a pilot script for a show that I really loved, but it shot in Canada. I was, like, so scared because I’m so vocal about hating ICE and hating this administration,” Cho said. She feared possible detention at the border and ultimately declined the role.
A Difficult Choice
The show, Heated Rivalry, has become a breakout hit since its premiere. The series, created by Letterkenny alum Jacob Tierney, focuses on a fictional hockey universe based on books by Rachel Reid. It stars Hudson Williams as Shane Hollander and Connor Storrie as Ilya Rozanov. Despite not taking part, Cho watched the series and even hosted rewatch parties, expressing her regret over the decision. “Like, it kills me,” she said, attributing it all to Trump.
Possible Future Involvement
Cho did not rule out the possibility of joining the show’s second season, which is set to air on HBO Max in the U.S. and Crave in Canada. “I asked them, we’ll see,” she commented, leaving the door open for potential involvement.
Impact of 'Heated Rivalry'
Since its debut, Heated Rivalry has propelled its stars into the spotlight. Williams and Storrie have made appearances at major events like the Golden Globes and the Met Gala. They have also secured roles in other projects, with Storrie involved in the A24 comedy Peaked and Williams starring in the upcoming series Yaga alongside Carrie-Anne Moss. Heated Rivalry has gained significant traction, highlighting the show's impact on its cast’s careers.
