Julia May Jonas's reinterpretation of Arthur Miller's 'All My Sons' titled 'A Woman Among Women' is now on stage at Lincoln Center Theater after its debut at The Bushwick Starr in 2024. The play shifts focus to what it means for a woman to be a community pillar, exploring themes of care and responsibility.
Reimagining Classics
Jonas's play is the first in a cycle of five that reinterprets American theatrical landmarks. 'All Long True American Stories' will also tackle works like Eugene O'Neill’s 'Long Day’s Journey into Night' and Sam Shepard’s 'True West'. Jonas remarked, “You do one, who cares? But if you do five, you’re trying to really discover something.”
From Joe Keller to Cleo
The play introduces Cleo, a therapist in Northampton, Massachusetts, maintaining themes of truth and personal responsibility from Miller's original. Instead of a wartime factory, the narrative explores women's wellness and community dynamics. Cleo’s daughter, Jo, faces legal issues, propelling a narrative about nature versus nurture, mental health, and agency.
Community and Participation
The play is performed in a space reminiscent of Cleo’s backyard, encouraging audience engagement. Director Sarah Cameron Hughes emphasizes the play's communal aspect, stating, “To know your neighbors and talk to them, and be ready to help them, feels very feminine.” The play's format seeks to involve the audience directly, creating a shared experience.
A Broader Artistic Vision
Jonas, who has adapted her novel 'Vladimir' into a Netflix series, challenges traditional storytelling and embraces contemporary themes. Her work often reflects her experiences and artistic insights, leading to narratives that resonate with modern audiences. Her upcoming novel 'Diana' continues to explore themes of mental health and familial dynamics.
Jonas's approach to theater and storytelling is rooted in introspection and art. “I’m kind of an art monster. I interpret my world through art,” she explains, reflecting her commitment to reshaping narratives and challenging norms.
