Ira Sachs’ film The Man I Love premiered to a seven-minute standing ovation at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, where the director and cast, including Rami Malek, Tom Sturridge, and Luther Ford, attended the gala screening.
Storyline and Setting
Set in New York in 1984, The Man I Love features Rami Malek as Jimmy George, a beloved queer entertainer living with AIDS. Despite his illness, Jimmy is determined to stage a new theatrical production. The film explores his relationship with his devoted partner, Dennis, played by Tom Sturridge, and a complicated affair with a younger neighbor, Vincent, portrayed by newcomer Luther Ford.
Audience Reception
The audience applauded through the credits and erupted in cheers as the lights came up. Rami Malek, attending the festival for the first time, appeared moved, with tears in his eyes. He tried to deflect attention to his co-stars, director Ira Sachs, and even festival director Thierry Frémaux.
Malek’s performance has sparked awards buzz, particularly for a scene where he sings Melanie’s “Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma.”
Director’s Remarks
Sachs, taking the microphone, expressed gratitude, saying, “This is a film about what we can bring to each other, through art, through love, through pain, through memory.” He acknowledged the collaborative effort of the 100-strong team and praised Malek, Sturridge, and Ford for their soulful performances.
Sachs, who co-wrote the script with Mauricio Zacharias, drew inspiration from real-life artists like Ron Vawter and Frank Maya, who worked until their final days.
Supporting Cast and Distribution
The film also features Rebecca Hall and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Jimmy’s sister and brother-in-law, along with numerous New York artists known to Sachs, enhancing the film’s theatrical troupe.
The Man I Love follows Sachs’ previous feature, Peter Hujar’s Day, continuing his esteemed career in independent cinema. The film is currently seeking U.S. distribution, with MK2 Films handling international sales and WME Independent managing North American representation.
