Sheep in the Box, directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, earning a five-minute standing ovation.
Cannes Regular Returns
Known for his deeply moving family dramas, Kore-eda is a familiar face at Cannes. His previous works, including the Palme d’Or-winning Shoplifters and Like Father, Like Son, have solidified his reputation at the festival. Sheep in the Box marks his 17th feature film and continues his exploration of family dynamics, this time set against the backdrop of a future dominated by artificial intelligence.
Plot and Cast
The film stars Haruka Ayase and Daigo Yamamoto as a couple dealing with the loss of their child. They introduce a humanoid child robot into their home, raising questions about AI's role in human relationships. Neon has acquired the U.S. distribution rights, planning to release the film later this year.
Critical Acclaim
The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney praised Sheep in the Box as a “must see.” Kore-eda discussed the film's themes in an interview with THR’s Patrick Brzeski, reflecting on the intersection of technology and human emotion.
