Eric Cantona, renowned for his football career, has become the busiest actor at Cannes this year, featuring in three films, including a documentary about his life.
Cantona's Films at Cannes
Cantona appears in Avril Besson’s debut feature “Marvellous Mornings” as a wine merchant, alongside India Hair and Raya Martigny. He also stars in Ali Cherri’s short “The Sentinel,” premiering in Critics’ Week. The documentary “Cantona,” directed by David Tryhorn and Ben Nicholas, is a special screening in the official selection, detailing Cantona’s life and career.
Documentary Insights
The documentary explores Cantona's journey from being an enfant terrible of French football to a Manchester United legend under Alex Ferguson. It highlights his career and sudden retirement in 1997 after securing four league championships in five years. Cantona shared, “It’s not only about the career of a player — it’s about the relationship between the manager and a personality.”
Passion for Cinema
Cantona’s love for film started in the cinemas of Marseille. His first movie experience was watching “The Towering Inferno” with his father. Cantona said, “I always had a passion for any kind of art, and cinema, of course, is the seventh art.”
Transition to Acting
After retiring from football at 30, Cantona pursued acting, having appeared in advertisements and movies with the support of French actor Jacques Villeret. He reflected, “I didn’t go to theater school. I just learned by myself, observing everybody around me.” Despite initial doubts, Cantona has now been acting for 30 years, longer than his football career.
Reflecting on Film and Football
Recalling his collaboration with Ken Loach on “Looking for Eric,” Cantona expressed admiration for Loach, saying, “Ken is one of the three men I’ve been lucky to meet who are the best people in terms of humility, humanity, and lots of humor.” Despite opportunities in football-related fields, Cantona chose to explore his passion for acting instead.
