The Critics Choice Association launched Pride Month with its third annual Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television in Los Angeles, spotlighting notable LGBTQ+ figures including Dan Levy, Hannah Einbinder, and Jacob Tierney.
Levy's Speech on Industry Challenges
Dan Levy, promoting his new show Big Mistakes, addressed the industry's expectations of queer creators. He hopes for a future where queer stories can flourish without the pressure of needing to succeed for more to be told. Levy stated, "Imagine the bliss of making something, knowing that there are so many queer stories being told that we can simply create for entertainment’s sake, or better yet, fail and be given a second chance."
Canada's Role in Success
Levy highlighted the pivotal role Canada played in the success of Schitt’s Creek and Heated Rivalry. He noted, "Two shows that only exist because Canada saw value in them first." Emphasizing the need for investment in queer voices, Levy remarked on the financial returns these stories bring, advocating for greater support from Hollywood.
Other Honorees and Reflections
Jacob Tierney, unable to attend, shared a video message about his commitment to Heated Rivalry's second season. Meanwhile, Noah Schnapp reflected on his decade-long journey with Stranger Things and how it paralleled his personal coming-out experience.
Hannah Einbinder, honored for her work on Hacks, received a tribute from Poppy Liu for her vocal support of a free Palestine, despite public backlash. Einbinder expressed pride in her character Ava Daniels, highlighting the importance of authentic queer representation.
Event Celebrates Diverse Achievements
The event also honored The Boulet Brothers, Bre-Z, Brandon Scott Jones, Dearbhla Walsh, Gina Yashere, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, and Paula Pell for their contributions to LGBTQ+ cinema and television.
