Cannes Ovation for Farhadi's 'Parallel Tales'

Asghar Farhadi's French-language drama 'Parallel Tales', starring Isabelle Huppert, earned a 5.5-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday night.

Farhadi's Return to Cannes

The Iranian director, who last attended Cannes with 'A Hero' in 2021, expressed gratitude to the audience by blowing kisses as they applauded the 2-hour and 20-minute film. During the ovation, Farhadi embraced actors Catherine Deneuve and Virginie Efira. Lead actress Huppert, wearing a striking bright-red gown, stood by Farhadi, smiling at the reception.

Plot and Cast Details

The film's narrative centers on Sylvie, played by Huppert, who observes her neighbors to inspire her novel. The character of Adam, portrayed by Adam Bessa, becomes integral to her life and work, blurring the lines between fiction and reality. The film also features notable French actors Efira, Vincent Cassel, Pierre Niney, and Deneuve.

Palme d'Or Contender

'Parallel Tales' is in the running for the Palme d'Or, a prize Farhadi has pursued with previous films, including 'The Past', 'The Salesman', 'Everybody Knows', and 'A Hero'. Farhadi's work has been recognized at Cannes before, with 'The Salesman' winning best screenplay.

Farhadi's Stance on Iran

Since 2023, Farhadi has lived outside Iran, vowing not to work there until restrictions on film and television regarding hijabs are lifted. In April, he urged filmmakers to oppose the Iran War, condemning attacks on infrastructure as war crimes. He called for unity to halt what he described as inhumane actions.
