Uwe Boll Launches Unofficial 'House of the Dead' Sequel

Uwe Boll, the cult B-movie director, has commenced production on 23 Years Later — The Castle of the Dead, an unofficial sequel to his 2003 film House of the Dead, lacking official ties to the Sega video game.

Returning Cast and Production Details

Principal photography for 23 Years Later is scheduled to begin on September 5 in Germany. The film features the return of Jonathan Cherry and Ona Grauer, original stars of House of the Dead. While not officially connected to Sega's House of the Dead video game, Boll's sequel continues the narrative in a new setting.

The script for the film is co-written by Lutz Geiger, with Michael Roesch, Boll's long-time collaborator, producing. Boris Wolffgardt joins as a co-producer.

Plot and Sequel History

The original House of the Dead revolved around students who discover an island infested with zombies while attending a rave. The survivors battle the undead in a derelict house. The plot for 23 Years Later remains under wraps, but Roesch hints at a setting upgrade from a house to a castle.

House of the Dead, despite critical panning, grossed over $10 million domestically and reportedly over $100 million worldwide through home video and VOD sales. A direct-to-video sequel, House of the Dead 2, was directed by Michael Hurst in 2005.

Competitive Landscape

News of Boll's unofficial sequel comes as Paul W.S. Anderson develops an official House of the Dead reboot for Sega. Boll's move seems to counter Anderson's project, known for his work on the Resident Evil series. Boll expressed his intent to create a distinct zombie movie, differing from what he anticipates to be Anderson's CGI-heavy approach.

“When I heard that Paul Anderson is rebooting House of the Dead, I immediately knew that it will be a soulless CGI orgy,” Boll stated. “And I want to do a completely different zombie movie: Bloody, gory and handmade.”

Future Projects

Boll has announced plans for an official reboot of Alone in the Dark, another early video game adaptation. Event Films, Boll's production company, has secured rights to the survival horror video game series from THQ Nordic. The original film starred Christian Slater and Tara Reid.

Additionally, Boll's action thriller Citizen Vigilante, starring Armie Hammer, is set for a summer release via Quiver. He is also in post-production for sequels to his 2024 cop thriller First Shift, a surprise hit on Paramount+.
