Actor Tim Allen has attributed the stalled progress of the Home Improvement reboot to issues involving his former co-stars. In a recent interview with Us Weekly, Allen explained that the reboot faces challenges due to 'personality problems' with the actors who played his onscreen sons.
Personality Problems Among Former Sons
Allen, known for his role as Tim 'The Tool Man' Taylor, referenced Zachery Ty Bryan, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Taran Noah Smith, who played his sons Brad, Randy, and Mark respectively. 'They’ve got their own issues,' Allen remarked, suggesting that a storyline focusing on the sons could be problematic, 'to put it mildly.'
The original series, which aired from 1991 to 1999, depicted Allen as a television host raising three boys with his wife, played by Patricia Richardson. The show also featured Richard Karn as a co-host and Earl Hindman as a quirky neighbor.
Legal Troubles and Career Changes
Since the show ended, Zachery Ty Bryan has faced multiple legal issues. He is currently serving a 16-month sentence for a felony DUI conviction in California. This will be followed by a 19-month sentence for probation violations related to a domestic violence conviction in 2023. Bryan was also arrested in 2020 for allegedly strangling his then-girlfriend, Johnny Faye Cartwright.
Meanwhile, Taran Noah Smith has left acting, with his last credit being in 1999's Batman Beyond. Jonathan Taylor Thomas has shifted his focus from acting to writing and directing, as noted by Patricia Richardson in a podcast appearance.
Challenges of a Reboot
Richardson has expressed skepticism about a potential reboot, highlighting the significant changes over the past 30 years. 'It’s not going to be the show at all,' she said, noting that the expectation of recapturing the original show’s essence would be 'very weird.'
Despite the hurdles, Allen has remained hopeful about reviving the franchise. However, the personal and professional trajectories of his former co-stars pose significant obstacles.
The beloved sitcom, which captured the quirks of family life and home improvement mishaps, continues to resonate with fans. Yet, any attempt to recreate that magic will require navigating the complexities mentioned by Allen and Richardson.
