Pokémon Go celebrated its 10th anniversary with a significant event in Times Square, where more than 1,000 players gathered for a raid featuring the legendary Pokémon Mega Mewtwo Y.
From Troubled Beginnings
Michael Steranka, vice president of product for Pokémon Go, reflected on the game's rocky start, recalling a decade-old event that he described as a disaster due to server issues. "A couple people joked with me that they hoped that I would go back to my hotel room and cry in the shower again last night, but this time happy cry," Steranka told Variety. "It was magical."
A Decade in the Making
Hosted by Sydnee Goodman, the Times Square event was a realization of the game's initial vision. The project took two and a half years to prepare, with significant technical and logistical efforts to accommodate over 1,000 players in a synchronized raid. "This project was two and a half years in the making," Steranka said. "There are just so many things that go into making this a reality."
Coordinating with local authorities to secure Times Square was a challenge, especially during the busy month of July when global events like the World Cup compete for attention.
Global Participation and Future Plans
Steranka acknowledged the disappointment of players unable to attend the event and expressed a commitment to creating memorable experiences worldwide. "We wanted it to be something that people could feel like they celebrated together all around the world," he said. "Even if you couldn’t make it to Times Square in person, my promise is that we are going to create equally epic moments all around the world."
What's Next for Pokémon Go?
The anniversary celebrations continue with an in-game and real-world Pokémon Go Fest event, offering special rewards tied to the game's 10th birthday. Sydnee Goodman sees it as an opportunity for both new and returning players to engage with the game. "It’s easy to get intimidated because there’s so much to do," she said. "But the more that I’ve spent time around it, I don’t really care if you think I’m playing this game wrong."
Goodman is looking forward to expanding her collection, particularly costume Pokémon, as the event provides a chance to catch previously missed bosses. "It feels like a redemption moment," she added.
