Netflix's 'Little House' Reboot Features Iconic Cameo

Alison Arngrim, known for her portrayal of Nellie Oleson on NBC's 'Little House on the Prairie', makes a cameo appearance in Netflix's reboot, marking a nostalgic nod to the cherished series.

Arngrim's Return

In the second episode of the new 'Little House on the Prairie', Laura Ingalls (played by Alice Halsey) and her sister Mary (Skywalker Hughes) find themselves lost in the wilderness of 1870s Independence, Kansas. While their parents, Caroline (Crosby Fitzgerald) and Charles (Luke Bracey), search for them, the sisters encounter a menacing trio, including Ida, portrayed by Arngrim.

This scene pays homage to Arngrim's original role, with her character attempting to hold the girls hostage until rescued by John Edwards (Warren Christie). Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine revealed her desire to include Arngrim, stating, "I always had this idea that I wanted Alison Arngrim to be in the show."

A Fan Favorite

Sonnenshine expressed enthusiasm about Arngrim's participation, sharing, "I read her autobiography, and it’s so good. She’s so smart and cool and interesting and funny." Arngrim embraced the role with enthusiasm, even requesting, "Can I have more stuff on my teeth?"

Sonnenshine, who met with other original cast members, including Melissa Gilbert, emphasized the reboot's connection to both the original series and Laura Ingalls Wilder's books.

Bridging Generations

The reboot, produced by Friendly Family Productions, continues to build on its legacy. Executive Producer Trip Friendly remains engaged with the original cast, and Sonnenshine attended 'LauraPalooza', meeting Dean Butler and Charlotte Stewart, among others.

Sonnenshine clarifies the reboot's distinctiveness: "We don’t license it. We don’t have anything to do with it," though overlaps occur as both draw from Wilder's real-life tales.

Looking Ahead

With the reboot already renewed for a second season, fans can anticipate the introduction of Willa Dunn as the new Nellie Oleson. Sonnenshine, referring to herself as a fan of Wilder's books, aims to stay true to the original texts.

Despite not having much exposure to the original series as a child, Sonnenshine revisited its pilot for reference. "In general, it’s just from the books," she says.
