Telluride's Michael D. Palm Theatre, a key venue for the Telluride Film Festival, suffered extensive damage from a flash flood last Friday, but efforts are underway to ensure it is ready for the festival by Labor Day weekend, starting September 4.
Flood Impact and Cleanup
The flash flood, which struck the base of the San Juan Mountain Range, led to mudslides damaging homes and businesses, including the Palm Theatre. John Bennett, chief of the Telluride Fire Protection District (TFPD), described the day as 'intense.' The theater, a 30,000-square-foot venue with 667 seats, is part of the Telluride Intermediate School and serves multiple community functions. Water entered through a damaged loading dock door, filling the theater with 3 to 4 feet of water and mud, reaching the stage level.
Susan Lilly, TFPD public information officer, stated the initial response included assessing for urgent safety issues and handing over the site to the Telluride School District. The district quickly engaged Servpro, a cleanup and restoration service, to begin water extraction and cleanup processes.
Restoration Efforts
Despite the damage, there is optimism that the Palm Theatre will be operational for the festival. Local arts organization Palm Arts is fundraising to aid restoration. The school district and film festival organizers are collaborating closely, with expectations to reopen the venue two weeks before the film festival, in time for the annual EDM event, Camp Alderwild.
Julie Huntsinger, Telluride Film Festival chief, conveyed confidence in the restoration timeline, acknowledging ongoing work beyond the festival but trusting the school district's assurances. She humorously added, 'And please don’t rain again, so that we can have another great film festival!'
Community Response
The flooding has galvanized community support. The Palm Theatre is a cherished local hub, and its swift restoration is crucial for upcoming events. The Telluride School District superintendent John Pandolfo and Palm Arts managing director Nicole Hattler were unavailable for comment.
Efforts continue to ensure that the Palm Theatre, a vital facility for Telluride's cultural events, will welcome festival-goers come Labor Day weekend.
