Anastasis Germanidis, co-founder and co-CEO, believes the future of AI lies in training models directly on observational data, stating, “Language models distill existing human knowledge, but to get beyond that, we need less biased data.”
Video Generation to World Models
In December 2025, Runway launched its first world model, with plans for further development. These models simulate environments to predict behaviors, offering applications in entertainment, gaming, and robotics. Runway's ambitions extend to solving complex problems like drug discovery through AI. Germanidis views world models as scientific infrastructure, suggesting they could accelerate scientific progress by reducing the time taken to obtain experimental results.
Competing with Big Tech
Runway faces competition from major players like Google, whose Genie world model is a direct competitor. Despite this, Runway's founders believe their lack of Silicon Valley ties is an advantage, fostering a scrappy, innovative culture. Runway has raised $860 million, with strategic partners like AMD Ventures and Nvidia, but remains cautious about further funding despite increasing compute demands.
Challenging Industry Norms
Runway's founders, with backgrounds in various fields, met at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Their vision for Runway began with a focus on democratizing filmmaking through AI, evolving into a broader mission to enable everyone to be great filmmakers. With offices worldwide and a team of 155, Runway continues to explore diverse applications for its AI technology, from robotics to climate modeling. Valenzuela, Runway's co-CEO, highlights the importance of challenging established norms, drawing inspiration from Chilean poet Nicanor Parra’s belief that rules are meant to be reimagined.
