The war drama Peluru Senja: The Ghost & the Gun is set for a nationwide Malaysian theatrical release on August 28, coinciding with the country's Independence Day weekend, with local distributor MSK Cinemas handling the release.

Film's Creative Team and Cast

This Bahasa Malaysia-language film is directed by Anshul Tiwari, a Singapore-based Indian filmmaker known for Before Life After Death and Bayaar. The screenplay is penned by Abhi Kumar, with Debasmita Dasgupta, Tim Willrich, Bo H. Holmgreen, and Mikail Chowdhury as producers. Jessie White of Misfit Studios and Mohsen Ashraf of Friendly Felix Studios serve as executive producers, alongside Tanveer Ali, Amreen Bashir of Amra Bangladeshi, and Tahmid Khan of Auras.

The film features award-winning Malaysian actor Fabian Loo, known for Rain Town and One Cent Thief, alongside Hazman Al-Idrus. They are joined by Indonesian actor Asmara Abigail and U.S. actor Brett Tutor.

Plot and Setting

Set in 1948 Malaya, the film explores the aftermath of World War II, focusing on a Malay soldier and a British soldier left behind after the British military withdrawal. Together, they face their wartime pasts while protecting a village from armed rebels.

Director Tiwari explained, "We have many World War II films but rarely are they centered on people from this region nor do we see the impact of the British withdrawal and the ensuing mess. Abhi Kumar’s screenplay offered the perfect opportunity to explore a theme that gripped me: the psychological trauma carried by war survivors."

International Collaboration

The production drew talent and crew from six countries. Dasgupta noted, "We proudly united talent and crew from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Bangladesh, and the U.K. to bring it to life."

Producer Bo H. Holmgreen highlighted the significance of filming in Bali, "Filming in Bali allowed us to craft a visually stunning backdrop with natural locations and we built fourteen sets to replicate 1940’s Malaysia."

Anticipated Release and Distribution

MSK Cinemas' Saradha Sivalingam emphasized the film's potential to resonate with audiences, citing its powerful storytelling, authentic setting, and high production values. Executive producer Jessie White added, "This film has always been about telling a deeply human story against the backdrop of an important moment in Malaysian history, and we can’t wait to share it on the big screen."

Peluru Senja: The Ghost & the Gun will be released in Malaysian cinemas nationwide on August 28.
