In the latest episode of “House of the Dragon,” Ser Criston Cole, portrayed by Fabien Frankel, declares his readiness to die with honor as the battle for the Iron Throne intensifies.
The Journey to a Suicide Mission
Criston leads his men, including Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox), to intercept the Rivermen from aiding Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) in King’s Landing. Their mission faces a setback when a horse is trapped, and they encounter a destroyed bridge, halting their pursuit.
As their numbers dwindle, Gwayne and Criston debate their next move. Gwayne realizes that Criston's intention all along was to embark on a suicide mission. Criston explains, “I have been a servant all my life...I am the realm’s greatest warrior. And I will die as such.”
Frankel on Criston’s Complexity
Frankel explains his perspective on Criston's motivations: “I can only understand why people feel how they feel about him as a character. It serves no purpose for me to see him in that way. You always have to be the bastion of your character.”
Discussing Criston's soldier identity, Frankel notes, “The only honest version of himself is the soldier...He’s very much led by his sword and his fighting instinct.”
Criston and Gwayne’s Relationship
The actor highlights Criston’s connection with Gwayne, describing a “yin-yang aspect” to their bond. “There’s a genuine fondness that Criston has for Gwayne,” Frankel says, adding that their shared experiences in battle forge a profound relationship.
Looking Ahead to Butcher's Ball
Frankel teases the upcoming Butcher’s Ball, a significant event for fans of George R.R. Martin’s series. He promises a “brilliantly choreographed fight” that showcases Criston's combat skills in a new light.
Reflecting on his role, Frankel shares, “I learned so much from playing Criston Cole...I look back on the last few years with just a ton of warmth towards the people I’ve gotten to work with.”
