Netflix's adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt's novel 'Remarkably Bright Creatures' has become the top film on the streaming platform, featuring Sally Field and Lewis Pullman.
Star-Studded Cast and Crew
Directed by Olivia Newman, the film stars Sally Field as a widow who forms an unlikely bond with a giant Pacific octopus, voiced by Alfred Molina. Lewis Pullman and Joan Chen also star in this emotional journey that has captured audiences worldwide.
Book to Screen Journey
The novel, published by Ecco in May 2022, marked Van Pelt’s debut and sold roughly four million copies. Kristin Nelson, Van Pelt's agent from Nelson Literary Agency, sent the manuscript to Anonymous Content's Kassie Evashevski, who manages the film and television rights. “It was one of the few things at the time that made me just feel good,” Evashevski told The Hollywood Reporter.
Production and Reception
The film was produced by Anonymous Content’s David Levine, with a script by John Whittington. Producers Bryan Unkeless and Peter Craig were instrumental in bringing the book to Field’s attention, with the actress also hearing about it from her son. Chief film critic David Rooney noted its “gentle sense of humor and depth of feeling” in his review for The Hollywood Reporter.
“The story has a lot of humor, but it’s very moving emotionally. It’s also very sincere,” Evashevski stated. “It’s really been a fairytale experience.”
Impact and Audience Reaction
The film has spurred a wave of emotional reactions on TikTok, with users posting clips of themselves responding to the film’s heartfelt moments. As 'Remarkably Bright Creatures' continues to hold its place as the number one film on Netflix’s top 10 rankings, its impact on viewers remains significant.
