Netflix has reached a significant milestone in its Fort Monmouth construction project, placing the final structural beam on Stages 3 and 4 of a planned 12 soundstages. The development reflects New Jersey's growing significance in the film industry, supported by the state's tax incentives.
Construction Progress
Netflix acquired a portion of the 1,200-acre former U.S. Army base in December 2022, with plans to transform it into a major production facility. Kenneth Falcon, Netflix's director of enterprise operations, aims to have the project completed by 2028, when all 4,000 construction workers will move on to new projects. Falcon said, "We had a very harsh winter, but we were able to keep the momentum going, and the contractor was able to stay on track."
Phases of Development
The project is being executed in phases, with Phase 1-A already halfway complete. Phase 1-B, which has just begun, is about 10% finished, according to Falcon. The site preparation, such as land grading and demolition, is complete, and construction is set to start next week. The entire Phase 1-B is expected to conclude in 2028.
Future Expansion Possibilities
Though additional land purchases are unlikely, Falcon noted there is room for further development on the existing 295-acre site. "There might be a Phase 2," Falcon said, indicating that further expansion depends on the success of production activities.
Investment in New Jersey
The Fort Monmouth project represents a $1 billion investment by Netflix, which is minor compared to its $20 billion content budget for the year. The development highlights a shift in production locations, with New Jersey experiencing a surge in production spending, as reported by ProdPro for the first quarter of 2026.
With major projects like Fort Monmouth, Netflix is signaling a broader interest in diversifying its production locations beyond traditional hubs like Los Angeles. The ongoing construction and future plans reflect the industry's evolving geographic landscape.
