Netflix has officially ordered 'Calabasas,' a new scripted series created by Chris Van Dusen, known for 'Bridgerton,' and executive produced by Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts. The project was acquired by Netflix in 2024 after a competitive bidding war and is the first show announced under Van Dusen's exclusive scripted deal with the streamer.
Based on a Bestselling Book
'Calabasas' is inspired by Via Bleidner's book 'If You Lived Here You'd Be Famous Now.' The story unfolds in an elite private school located in the exclusive town of Calabasas, where the headmaster's ambitious daughter faces a tumultuous romance with a rebellious peer. The series explores themes of ambition, rebellion, and the complex web of desires masked by appearances.
Netflix's Announcement at Upfronts
During its Upfronts presentation, Netflix revealed the series order but withheld details on casting and production schedules. 'Calabasas' is the second upcoming series on Netflix set in the neighborhood that has been popularized by the Kardashians and various rap songs over the past decade.
Another Calabasas-Based Series
Notably, 'Calabasas Confidential,' another series set in the California enclave, is premiering on Netflix on May 29. This reality series follows a group of friends and exes returning to their childhood mansions. Promotional art for the show features an image of a well-manicured hand holding sunglasses, a BMW key, and an Erewhon smoothie.
Calabasas has been home to numerous celebrities, including Justin Bieber, Drake, Kanye West, and Jennifer Lopez, further establishing its reputation as a hotspot for the rich and famous.
