The writing process for the second season of Apple TV's hit series Widow’s Bay is underway, following its strong debut and 19 Emmy nominations.

Comic-Con Insights

At San Diego Comic-Con, series creator Katie Dippold discussed the show's success during Collider’s Showrunners on Showrunning panel. The series, featuring Matthew Rhys as the mayor of a supposedly haunted New England island, quickly rose in popularity after its April premiere.

“It took a long time,” Dippold said about recognizing the show's fanbase. She humorously mentioned being “terrified” of Reddit but acknowledged the growing discussions about Widow’s Bay on the platform. “Seeing that was really shocking.”

Preparing for Season Two

Dippold, known for films like The Heat and Snatched, revealed she was unaware of the series renewal until just before it was publicized. The writers' room for the new season began this week, aiming to start filming next year. The cast includes Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Stephen Root.

Lessons Learned

Reflecting on the first season, Dippold shared, “I learned pretty quickly in making it.” She emphasized the importance of a straight, dramatic acting style in the comedy's success. “Throughout the process, it was making sure everything served that, and so that’s top of mind going into season two.”

She noted that the initial scripts were lengthy, necessitating last-minute cuts. “I’ll just be more mindful of that because we didn’t need that much.”

Streamlining the Process

“In the edit, I just could see, ‘Oh, you actually didn’t need any of this stuff anyway.’ I learned a lot about what you don’t need and getting to things quicker,” Dippold added.

Critic Angie Han praised Widow’s Bay in her review for The Hollywood Reporter, highlighting its effective blend of comedy and horror.
