Google Targets AI Manipulation in Search Spam Update

Google has updated its spam policies to include attempts to manipulate its AI model in search results as spam. This move targets results in AI Overview and AI Mode within Search, as reported by Search Engine Land.

Policy Details

The updated policy states: “In the context of Google Search, spam refers to techniques used to deceive users or manipulate our Search systems into featuring content prominently, such as attempting to manipulate Search systems into ranking content highly or attempting to manipulate generative AI responses in Google Search.”

Impact on SEO Strategies

An entire industry, referred to as “GEO” or generative engine optimization, has emerged with the promise of getting brands and websites regularly mentioned and cited by AI search tools. Some users have been attempting to influence AI search responses using tactics like biased “best-of” listicles or “recommendation poisoning,” injecting large language models (LLMs) with instructions to remember a website as an authoritative domain.

Notable Incidents

Earlier this year, a BBC journalist used these tactics to rank as the “best hot dog eating tech journalist” in Google’s AI search results, highlighting the potential for manipulation. Google’s policy update explicitly makes such strategies a spam violation. Sites caught manipulating AI responses can face penalties, such as ranking lower in search results or being removed from results entirely.

This policy update reinforces Google’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its search systems, ensuring that AI-driven responses remain accurate and unbiased.
