Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias, the first comedian to sell out Dodger Stadium, was awarded the Generation Award at the Just For Laughs comedy festival, held at MTelus in Montreal.
Comedy with a Purpose
"If I can leave you with anything, it's do [comedy] because you love it," Iglesias told the audience. "Don't expect to be paid. If you're looking to be paid, you're doing it for the wrong reason. Do it because it makes you feel good to be on stage in front of people, making people smile, making people laugh, making people forget, making people feel good." He humorously added, "And if you do that well, you're going to drive a nice car one day. But don't be in a rush."
Sharp Jabs and Honors
The event, hosted by Tone Bell, included pointed humor and heartfelt moments. Bell remarked on Just For Laughs' return after emerging from bankruptcy protection in 2024, joking, "I got here last night, and they're pushing me out in the morning." Canadian actress and comedian Lisa Gilroy, awarded rising comedy star of the year, humorously noted her mental health in her acceptance speech.
Chris Fleming, awarded for his HBO special "Chris Fleming: Live at the Palace," delivered his own jokes about Montreal, quipping about the city's readiness for technological advancements.
Reflections on Comedy's Role
Atsuko Okasuka, recognized as the breakout comedy star of the year, humorously criticized the term "breakout," relating it to her comedic journey. "Really, as comedians, we're seen as the weirdos of the industry, the raccoons of Hollywood," she said. "And still we rise."
Tributes and Legacy
Iglesias also introduced Bruce Hills, former Just For Laughs programming head, who was honored with the JFL Legacy Tribute Award. Iglesias joked about being a last resort for the presentation, then thanked Hills for his pivotal role in his career. Hills shared memories of the festival's early days, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in success.
Overall, the event celebrated comedy's ability to connect and uplift people, highlighting the achievements of comedians who have made significant contributions to the industry.
