Dua Lipa Files $15M Lawsuit Against Samsung

Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung, seeking $15 million in damages for unauthorized use of her image on television packaging. The complaint, submitted on May 8 in California’s Central District Court, accuses Samsung of “copyright infringement, trademark infringement and misappropriation” of her likeness.

Image Used Without Consent

The lawsuit claims Samsung used a photograph of Lipa taken backstage at Austin City Limits in 2024. This image, for which Lipa owns the copyright, was featured on boxes for various Samsung television models sold across the United States. According to the filing, Lipa did not consent to this usage.

The issue came to her attention in June 2025, following social media buzz about a “Dua Lipa TV Box.” The lawsuit cites Instagram comments, including one user saying they'd buy the TV because “Dua is on it,” and another suggesting that putting Lipa’s picture on a product ensures its success. Lipa argues that Samsung’s actions were a deliberate attempt to leverage her image to boost sales.

Unsuccessful Cease-and-Desist Efforts

Lipa’s legal team states that they issued a cease-and-desist request to Samsung last year. However, the complaint describes Samsung’s response as “dismissive and callous,” ignoring repeated demands to remove the packaging from the market.

Samsung countered these claims in a May 11 statement to Pitchfork. The company asserted that Lipa’s image was used in 2025 to “reflect the content” provided by third-party partners available on Samsung TVs. Samsung maintains they received explicit assurances from their content partner confirming permission for usage, including on retail boxes.

Seeking Resolution

While denying any intentional misuse, Samsung expressed a willingness to seek a “constructive resolution” with Lipa’s team. The company remains open to discussions to address the concerns raised by the lawsuit.

Lipa’s Recent Projects

Beyond legal battles, Lipa continues to expand her artistic endeavors. She released her album Radical Optimism in 2024. More recently, she was announced to appear in an upcoming A24 comedy film, Peaked, directed by Molly Gordon, featuring a star-studded cast including Connor Storrie, Emma Mackey, Laura Dern, and Alex Consani.
