Documentary filmmaker Brian Lindstrom has died at 65 following a battle with progressive supranuclear palsy, his wife Cheryl Strayed announced.
Family's Heartfelt Goodbye
"Brian Lindstrom died this morning the way he lived — with gentleness and courage," Strayed wrote on Instagram. "Our children, Carver and Bobbi, and I held him as he took his last breath and we will hold him forever in our hearts." Strayed expressed the immense love they held for him, surpassing the sorrow of his passing.
Lindstrom's Illness and Work
Lindstrom was diagnosed with the fatal illness just two weeks before his death. Progressive supranuclear palsy is a frontotemporal disorder affecting nerve cells in the brain, impacting thinking and body movements. It shares symptoms with Parkinson's disease, such as impaired walking and balance.
Lindstrom's films focused on marginalized stories. "He erased that X with his camera and his astonishing heart," Strayed noted. His work highlighted incarcerated mothers, individuals with mental illness, and teens in difficult situations.
Impact and Legacy
Strayed emphasized Lindstrom's dedication to showing the value of every person. "He spoke truth to power," she wrote, measuring his success by the impact of his films. His projects changed lives, saved programs, and influenced policies.
Lindstrom's credits include "Alien Boy: The Life and Death of James Chasse" (2013) and "Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill" (2022), featuring Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Graham Nash.
Personal Life and Tributes
Strayed, executive producer on Lindstrom's projects, also produced adaptations of her books "Wild" and "Tiny Beautiful Things." She praised Lindstrom as a devoted partner and father, lauding his kindness and belief in the goodness of all.
Their children, Carver and Bobbi, embody his legacy. "We do not know how we will live without him," Strayed wrote, noting the enduring light he leaves behind.
