Public Theater's production of 'Romeo & Juliet' in Central Park began its season with an unexpected twist: a real wedding on stage. On the opening night, artist Oscar Diaz and his partner Janelly Mendoza exchanged vows in front of a live audience of 1,800 at the Delacorte Theater.
Concept Inspired by Border Marriages
Two months prior, resident director Saheem Ali visited Laredo, Texas, to explore the socio-political themes influencing this season's Shakespeare in the Park. In a local café, he met Diaz and Mendoza, who shared insights into border marriages where couples marry at the wall dividing the U.S. and Mexico. This concept inspired Ali to incorporate a real-life wedding into the play’s finale.
A Memorable Ceremony
Mendoza described the ceremony as a unique blend of excitement and nerves, but ultimately a celebration of unity. “We loved the idea of celebrating our commitment in such a memorable setting,” she told Vogue. Mendoza wore a long ivory silk dress, while Diaz incorporated a Western belt buckle and cowboy boots, nodding to his heritage.
Personal Touches and Symbolism
The couple's families played a significant role in personalizing the ceremony. A week before the event, Mendoza's parents discovered Romeo and Juliet-themed rings in Mexico City, which the couple wore during the ceremony, adding a special touch to their nuptials.
Nightly Weddings Throughout the Run
Ali has arranged for a couple to marry during each performance of 'Romeo & Juliet'. Francis Jue, who plays Friar Lawrence, and his understudy became ordained officiants to conduct these weddings. The production has a backup plan for inclement weather, ensuring the weddings proceed smoothly.
Ali's vision for the play underscores the power of art to reflect and resolve societal conflicts, bringing audiences closer to the narrative's heart. The live weddings add a layer of authenticity and modern relevance to Shakespeare's classic tale of love and division.
