The New York Botanical Garden transformed The Bronx into a vibrant celebration for its 51st annual Conservatory Ball last Friday, themed 'Flower Power'. The event honored flowers as symbols of peace and love, with attendees embracing floral-inspired attire.
Groovy Atmosphere and Floral Fashion
Guests were welcomed with cocktails and canapés beneath colorful tents, embodying the 1960s and '70s spirit in their black-tie outfits. Mikimoto, one of the event partners, showcased a rainbow-inspired display with its 'Prestige Rendezvous' collection and a rare conch pearl necklace. “We’re from nature and always have been—our craftsmanship, and the alignment with the New York Botanical Garden is exactly the same,” said Georgina Coleman, Mikimoto's SVP of Retail.
Vibrant Reception and Culinary Delights
Inside the tent, purple and orange lights complemented the groovy installations and sequined tablecloths. Cloud Catering served vibrant dishes, including a spring bean salad with edible flowers and miso-glazed black cod with purple daikon and carrot velouté. Botanical-themed desserts completed the culinary experience.
Notable Attendees and Speeches
The event gathered trustees, donors, and celebrities like Candace Bushnell, Cynthia Rowley, and Jason Rembert. Christopher Griffin, known as Plant Kween, remarked, “Green spaces are not always accessible. Places like NYBG are lovely third spaces where we can reconnect with the land.” J. Barclay Collins II, NYBG Chairman, and CEO Jennifer Bernstein addressed the crowd, with Bernstein calling the night “a reunion of people who make possible what we do here.”
Supporting Botanical Initiatives
Proceeds from the gala support the Garden's research, education, and horticulture programs. The 'Flower Power' theme took over two years to develop, involving works by artists like Andy Warhol and Milton Glaser. “We plan years in advance to execute at the highest level. 'Flower Power' highlights our connection to flowers across time periods, especially the 1960s. It’s a summer of peace, love, and plants at NYBG,” Bernstein noted.
DJ Runna concluded the evening with a diverse music set, drawing guests to the dance floor. The 'Flower Power' exhibition is open through October, featuring multidisciplinary art exploring floral themes.
