Cecilia Vega, a former correspondent for 60 Minutes, claims she faced pressure from CBS News executives to include political bias in segments that did not air. Vega, who was dismissed in May, discussed her experiences at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists conference.
Allegations of Misinformation
Vega told ABC News’ John Quiñones that higher-ups requested changes to three segments this year, reportedly based on misinformation, as reported by The New York Times. She stated, “I’ve gone head-to-head with editors for 25 years in this business, but never have I felt that those edits came from a place of misinformation or politics.”
Executives allegedly asked Vega to add footage of protestors attacking individuals they believed were ICE agents in a January segment about Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Vega was also asked to include video of a police chief rolling his eyes during a news conference, neither of which she found evidence for.
Political Influence Requests
In a February segment about poverty in West Virginia, Vega was requested to mention Vice President JD Vance due to his prior writings on Ohio poverty. According to Vega, the piece was not intended to focus on political figures.
Another segment was reportedly altered to include a statement about Iran being outgunned by the United States and Israel, which Vega described as “an administration talking point.”
Claims of Censorship
Vega has previously accused CBS News of attempting to insert bias into stories, suggesting that reporting teams withheld pitches due to fear of repercussions. She described the situation as “censorship, both imposed and self-driven,” calling it dangerous for the show and democracy. CBS News responded by stating Vega’s claims were “not based in reality.”
Dismissals at CBS News
Vega was fired as part of a significant overhaul by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, which included the dismissal of executive producer Tanya Simon, Scott Pelley, and Sharyn Alfonsi. Pelley accused Weiss of “incompetence and unprofessionalism” and claimed management instructed him to inject bias into a politically sensitive story. Weiss countered Pelley's accusations, citing a breach of “trust and mutual respect.”
