Bombay Berlin Film Productions (BBFP) has announced a slate of four feature-length documentaries, covering topics from rural Indian healthcare to family dynamics, while expanding its role as a cross-border boutique studio.
New Documentaries and Themes
The Mumbai- and Berlin-based company is taking on these projects as a creative and strategic partner, focused on completion, co-production, festival circulation, and distribution. It also aims to expand its work in fiction and international co-productions. Katharina Suckale of BBFP stated at the Cannes Film Market, "Documentary filmmaking is where I began, and it has always remained deeply personal to me. What drew us to these films was not simply the subjects themselves, but the honesty and specificity with which the filmmakers approached them. These are stories rooted in very local realities, yet they speak to questions that resonate universally."
Featured Projects
- Barefoot Champions: Directed by Melbourne-based Sana Panghal, this documentary explores alternative education models in rural India that are empowering women. Cinematography is by Iain Soumitri, with production by Evadere Studios alongside BBFP.
- Sanju’s Kitchen: Directed by Delhi-based Neelabh Bafna, this film provides an intimate look at a family dealing with financial and emotional challenges following the father's arrest. It is co-produced by Abhinav Tyagi and Krina Prajapati of The Aam Company.

Strategic Expansion and Future Plans
BBFP is treating the slate as a unified body, aiming to boost international visibility and develop funding structures that include grants and impact-led financing. Arfi Laamba of BBFP said, "We are also interested in cultivating a newer generation of patrons and investors who want to support work that creates cultural and social impact alongside financial sustainability."
The documentary expansion aligns with BBFP's broader portfolio, including the Turkish-Indian-German co-production "Thursday Night Is Too Dark" in post-production and "Portuguese Man of War" which premiered at CineMart during the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The company also released its Marathi feature "Trijya (Radius)" in Indian theaters in February 2026, following its festival run. Other recent credits include the Busan premiere "Spying Stars" by Vimukthi Jayasundara and the short film "Abja and Her Pickled Eggs." BBFP is also growing its service production arm, handling projects involving virtual production, animatronics, and large-scale set construction.
Global Reach and Recognition
Over its 15-year history, BBFP's films have been showcased at prestigious festivals such as Venice, SXSW, Busan, Shanghai, and Cairo, with select titles streaming on Netflix and Mubi.
