Alexis Bittar's Documentary on Reclaiming the Flag

Alexis Bittar, a renowned jewelry designer and filmmaker, is challenging perceptions of the American flag with his documentary short, Reclaim the Flag. Produced by Oscar winner Bruce Cohen, the film examines how the flag can be seen as a symbol of unity, especially for the LGBTQ community. Bittar's own Brooklyn home prominently displays the flag, sparking curiosity about its meaning.

Exploring Symbolism and Perceptions

The film includes interviews with notable figures such as Lena Waithe, Gus Kenworthy, Jonathan Capehart, Marc Jacobs, Bill T. Jones, Jim Parsons, George Takei, Gottmik, Gigi Goode, and Cheyenne Jackson, among others. Waithe comments, "Depending on how the United States feels about you, will depend on how you feel about the flag."

Navigating Political Climate

Bittar noted the challenges faced during filming due to the political climate, with many hesitant to discuss America on camera. "When we filmed it, people were emotional right out of the gate," Bittar stated. The documentary captures participants' reactions when unexpectedly holding the American flag, prompting them to confront their feelings about the symbol.

Reclaiming the Flag's Meaning

Bittar argues that the flag has been "co-opted" and "weaponized" by the political right, while the left has failed to address this. The documentary omits direct references to Donald Trump, instead focusing on the intended representation of the flag as a symbol of equality. "It was intended to represent all men are created equal," Bittar explained.

Pride Month Screenings and Movement Launch

The documentary had special screenings in New York City and Los Angeles during Pride Month, in collaboration with the Human Rights Campaign. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed the film, stating, "This film asks us a question: What does the American flag mean?"

Despite the film's thematic focus, Bittar humorously dismissed the idea of incorporating the flag into his jewelry designs. "I don't want to see a crystallized American flag," he joked.
