YouTube is extending its AI likeness detection tool to all users over 18, allowing any adult to monitor the platform for potential deepfakes of themselves.
Tool Functionality
The feature, which utilizes a selfie-style scan, monitors YouTube for lookalikes and notifies users of any matches. If a match is found, users can request content removal. Despite the tool's capabilities, YouTube has noted that the volume of removal requests remains small.
Previous Testing Phases
Initially, the likeness detection tool was tested with content creators, before expanding to government officials, politicians, journalists, and the entertainment industry. The recent expansion marks a significant shift, enabling typical users to oversee their likeness on the platform.
Criteria for Removal
Requests for takedowns are assessed under YouTube's privacy policy. Factors considered include the realism of the content, whether it is labeled as AI-generated, and if a person is uniquely identifiable. Exceptions exist for parody and satire, and the tool focuses solely on facial likeness, excluding other identifiers like voice. Users can opt out and have their data deleted.
Implications and Concerns
“With this expansion, we’re making clear that whether creators have been uploading to YouTube for a decade or are just starting, they’ll have access to the same level of protection,” said YouTube spokesperson Jack Malon in an email.
Deepfake content has predominantly involved public figures, yet the technology poses risks for private individuals too. Instances include teenagers being deepfaked by classmates, and lawsuits against companies like xAI for generating inappropriate content.
