The Warner Bros. Discovery upfront event for 2026, held at 10 a.m. on a Wednesday, lacked excitement, reflecting the company's uncertain future amid its impending merger with Paramount Skydance.
Merger Shadows Event
Warner Bros. Discovery, created in April 2022 from the merger of Discovery, Inc. and WarnerMedia, is set to join Paramount Skydance this fall, pending regulatory approval. This leaves the media giant with little to showcase at a trade show focused on upcoming fall slates.
Key Executives Absent
CEO David Zaslav and HBO chief Casey Bloys were notably absent, with Bruce Campbell, chief revenue and strategy officer, and CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels attending the press lunch post-event. In their place, advertising presidents Ryan Gould and Bobby Voltaggio addressed the audience, attempting to reassure attendees of the company's commitment to partnership and performance over the next few months.
Unusual Circumstances
Voltaggio opened the event with a joke acknowledging the unusual circumstances, referring to the 'elephant in the room' as the 'Ellison' — a nod to the merger. Gould added, "Everyone here knows that there’s change ahead and that there’s change at our company. But there’s change across the entire media industry."
Lack of Star Power
Executives like Karen Bronzo, Dana Nussbaum, and Shauna Spenley presented the latest offerings, but the event was devoid of significant star presence. The lineup included Abby Phillip, Anderson Cooper, Craig Ferguson, Leslie Jones, M. Night Shyamalan, and Shaquille O’Neal, among others. The event's subdued atmosphere was evident, with the red carpet remaining largely unused.
