Uber Robotaxis: Odd Lost Items and New Services

Uber has uncovered thousands of misplaced items in its robotaxis over the past year, according to its latest Lost & Found Index. The list includes everyday items like phones and wallets, but also more unusual items such as a set of dentures, an 'I Heart Hot Dads' bag, and a blue hat labeled 'Emotional Support Human'.

Quirky Finds in Robotaxis

For a decade, Uber’s Lost & Found Index has offered insights into customer habits. This year, it adds a twist by featuring items from robotaxis. Although the count isn't in the millions like traditional rides, the list remains eclectic. Among the notable finds are a 15-pound yo-yo, a large black marble duck, a Squishmallow, and a Charli XCX poster.

Business Opportunities in AVs

While amusing, these forgotten items also signal a business chance for Uber. The company has been forming partnerships with autonomous vehicle (AV) technology firms, notably launching the 'Waymo on Uber' service in Austin in March 2025. This was followed by expansions into Atlanta, and collaborations with Motional in Las Vegas and Avride in Dallas, although the latter still use human safety operators.

Recovering Lost Items

Uber’s system for retrieving lost items in robotaxis mirrors its existing process. Riders can access the app to report lost items, contact support, and arrange for collection. Options include paying $15 for Uber Courier to deliver the item or picking it up directly from an AV depot.

Uber Courier, formerly Uber Connect, was rebranded to optimize their existing logistics network. Amy Satrom, Uber's global head of autonomous support, emphasizes their decade-long expertise in reuniting riders with lost belongings, now being applied to AV services.

Future of Autonomous Vehicles

In February, Uber launched Uber Autonomous Solutions, a division aiming to support AV operations across various sectors. With plans to expand robotaxi rides to 15 global cities by year-end and aspirations to be the leading facilitator of AV trips by 2029, Uber is positioning autonomous vehicles as a key revenue stream.
