Santa Fe Celebrates Indigenous Fashion with SWAIA Gala

The historic Eldorado Hotel in Santa Fe transformed into a vibrant fashion hub on May 9, 2026, as the SWAIA Native Fashion Week hosted its annual gala and fashion show. The event spotlighted five contemporary Indigenous designers, drawing fashion enthusiasts adorned in Indigenous-made designs and jewelry.

Native Creatives Market Kicks Off

The weekend commenced on Friday with the Native Creatives Market, a two-day pop-up bazaar inside the Eldorado. Visitors explored booths featuring clothing, jewelry, textiles, and beauty products from Native artists. Highlights included Penny Singer's hand-appliquéd vests and Kenneth Johnson's gold and gemstone bracelets.

Spotlighting Contemporary Designers

The gala's centerpiece was the fashion show, emphasizing handcraft and couture. Jamie Okuma, a 2025 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, opened the show with designs including a silk dress featuring her geometric print and a hand-painted leather piece. Jontay Kahm followed with organza creations mimicking feathers, inspired by traditional dance regalia.

Traditional Craft with Modern Twists

Patricia Michaels showcased her signature prints on silk dresses, while Pamela Baker incorporated Northwest Coast formline design in her elegant gowns. Lauren Good Day concluded with vibrant ribbon skirts and beaded moccasins, also presenting cradleboards adorned with quillwork and ledger art.

An Annual Highlight for Santa Fe

Though the Santa Fe Indian Market in August typically draws larger crowds, the May event provided an intimate setting for artists to present unique pieces. The SWAIA Native Fashion Week continues to celebrate Indigenous artistry, blending traditional techniques with contemporary innovation.
