Uber announced plans to open two new campuses in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, accommodating around 9,600 people by the end of 2027, expanding its tech footprint in India.
New Campuses in Bengaluru and Hyderabad
The new offices will complement Uber’s existing operations in these Indian cities, which are pivotal hubs for software and engineering. This move underscores India's role as a crucial engineering and product development hub for global tech firms.
Collaboration with Adani Group
Uber also revealed its partnership with Indian conglomerate Adani Group to establish its first data center in India, slated to go live in the fourth quarter of 2026. These announcements were made during Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's recent visit to India.
Focus on AI and Technology Talent
Uber employs about 3,500 people in India and plans to hire more technical talent as it scales AI investments globally. The company is actively recruiting for roles in generative AI, machine learning, autonomous vehicle operations, and back-end infrastructure.
Challenges in the Indian Market
Despite India’s importance, Uber faces challenges such as intense price competition, supply shortages, and high driver incentive costs. The market's regulatory landscape has also caused disruptions in services at times. Uber faces stiff competition from local rivals like Rapido, which has overtaken Ola as Uber’s biggest competitor in India, according to Khosrowshahi.
Despite these challenges, Uber views India as a significant base for engineering and infrastructure to support its global operations, amid growing demand for AI talent and computing resources.
