President Donald J. Trump officially canceled the 'Freedom 250' concerts scheduled for the National Mall in Washington, D.C., after nearly all the artists withdrew from the event. Instead, Trump plans to hold a rally featuring a speech by himself and musical performances by Lee Greenwood and others.
Lee Greenwood to Headline Rally
The rally will include music, with Trump planning to be introduced by Lee Greenwood, known for his 1980s country hit 'God Bless the U.S.A.' Trump stated that the event will be 'the Greatest Rally, EVER!' and promised attendees 'the Greatest Music ever played.'
Artists Withdraw Over Concerns
Acts such as Morris Day, Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, Young MC, the Commodores, and Milli Vanilli dropped out, citing concerns over the nonpartisan nature of the event and security issues. Vanilla Ice was the only artist still committed to performing prior to the cancellation.
'We don’t want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep — we’ve told them all to stay home,' Trump declared.
Additional Performances Scheduled
Besides Greenwood, the rally will feature Christopher Macchio performing songs like 'Nessun Dorma' and 'Hallelujah.' Trump also announced the participation of the U.S. Army Band, 'Pershing’s Own,' and the Armed Forces Choir, alongside 'The President’s Own United States Marine Band' and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus.
Freedom 250 Initiative's Origins
The 'Freedom 250' initiative, intended as a public/private partnership, was created as an alternative to the bipartisan 'America 250' program established by Congress. The initiative faced controversy after the artist lineup announcement, leading to the concert series' cancellation.
Trump had posted a message saying 'cancel it' four days ago, which prompted speculation about the future of the concerts. The decision to replace the concerts with a rally highlights Trump's direct involvement in the initiative.
