The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) opened with a focus on emerging Asian filmmakers, marking a significant shift towards nurturing new talent in Chinese-language cinema.

Keane T.K. Wong's Debut

First-time director Keane T.K. Wong's psychological drama Afterpiece was selected to open the festival, which runs until June 21. Wong expressed gratitude for the recognition, saying, “For a feature film debut to be selected as the opening film of SIFF is a high recognition of the film and a great honor for me personally.” He credited veteran producer Derek Yee and the Directors’ Succession Scheme for supporting new talent.

Initiatives for Emerging Talent

SIFF showcases several initiatives aimed at supporting the next generation of filmmakers, including the SIFF ING Young Filmmakers Program, the SIFF NEXT Film Project Training Camp, and the SIFF YOUNG × Shanghai Young Filmmakers Support Program. Industry veterans Joan Chen and Wen Muye participate as mentor and juror, respectively, enhancing these programs.

Asian New Talent and Global Reach

SIFF’s Asian New Talent competition is known for discovering emerging stars, with this year's buzz surrounding films like Zhang Hanyi’s Cassowary and Wan Bo’s Strangers in the Mountain. Chen Guo, managing director of the Shanghai International Film & TV Events Center, highlighted the festival's comprehensive support system, which includes industry programs, awards, and international screenings.

This year, the festival features entries from 34 countries, marking the first Moroccan film in the main competition in 27 years and first-time entries from Jordan and Saudi Arabia in the Asian New Talent section. Interestingly, the main competition doesn't include films from the U.S., Japan, or South Korea, though there are 100% world premieres for the first time.

Diverse Programming and AI Focus

SIFF's program includes a nod to contemporary Chinese cinema, alongside Cannes favorites and tributes to filmmakers like Ken Loach, Steven Spielberg, and René Laloux. The main competition jury features Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Guan Hu, and Xin Zhilei.

Reflecting on the rise of artificial intelligence, this year’s festival includes seminars on AI's impact on cinema. Chen Guo noted, “Today, the rapid development of digital technologies and artificial intelligence is opening entirely new possibilities for cinematic expression.”
