Russell T. Davies Talks Urgent Queer Drama 'Tip Toe'

Russell T. Davies, known for his work on Doctor Who, It’s a Sin, and Queer as Folk, shared insights into his new five-part series Tip Toe during a keynote at SXSW London.

Series Overview and Themes

The Channel 4 thriller-drama stars Alan Cumming and David Morrissey, set against a backdrop of societal backlash against queer rights. The plot revolves around a Manchester bar owner and his neighbor drawn into a feud, highlighting the infiltration of online anger into the real world.

Davies emphasized, “It is about the anger of the online world creeping into the real world.” Although a U.S. broadcaster for the show remains unannounced, its themes of social media-fueled anger resonate globally.

Timeliness and Rapid Production

Davies explained the urgency behind the series, saying, “The time was right partly because I had the idea for the story, and you should always pounce before someone else has the same idea.” He quickly drafted the first episode, leading Channel 4 to commission the series in just seven days.

With current political landscapes potentially shifting, Davies noted the need to rush the production to ensure relevance, stating, “We raced it onto the screen.”

Discussing LGBTQ+ Rights and Social Media

Reflecting on the current climate, Davies expressed grave concerns about the weaponization of the trans argument against the LGBTQ+ community. He highlighted the dangers of social media, asserting, “Our technology is way ahead of our emotions, and that’s a very big problem.”

Casting Choices and Dynamics

The casting of Alan Cumming and David Morrissey was pivotal. Davies discovered their longstanding friendship only after casting, which enhanced their on-screen chemistry. Cumming was approached before the script was complete, which is atypical for Davies.

Davies remarked on Morrissey's role, “David makes it absolutely a co-lead with Alan, and Alan graciously loves that.” The series notably shifts perspectives, allowing viewers to see the story through Morrissey’s character Clive in episode three.

Character Complexities

Clive’s character is explored beyond typical labels, as Davies explained, “He is homophobic and transphobic, but the series looks at what’s pushing him there.” The show explores the impact of misinformation on individuals like Clive.

Leo, played by Cumming, is not portrayed as a flawless hero. Davies described him as sometimes failing to act against Clive's antagonism, representing a generation not fully confronting emerging societal issues.
