Marco Perego's Cannes Breakthrough

Marco Perego, an Italian conceptual artist, enters the Cannes Film Festival with three films in the main competition, a first for any producer.

Leaf Entertainment's Ambitious Vision

Perego co-founded Leaf Entertainment with Michael Cerenzie after his directorial debut, The Absence of Eden, starring his wife Zoe Saldaña, in 2023. The company aims to collaborate with top global auteurs to realize their projects. Perego's ambitious approach has already paid off with his unprecedented achievement at Cannes.

Cannes Line-up and Artistic Vision

His Cannes entries include Minotaur by Russia's Andrey Zvyagintsev, Fjord from Romanian Cristian Mungiu starring Sebastian Stan, and Paper Tiger by James Gray featuring Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, and Miles Teller. Perego also supports Kantemir Balagov's Butterfly Jam in Directors’ Fortnight. Perego values creating a 'company of artists', providing a platform for directors to express their voices.

Collaborations with Renowned Directors

Perego's involvement with Zvyagintsev began through a mutual acquaintance, driven by his admiration for Zvyagintsev's Leviathan. Wanting to be an asset rather than a typical producer, Perego emphasizes supporting directors like Zvyagintsev and Gray in realizing their visions, highlighting the cultural necessity of backing auteurs.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite difficulties in film production, particularly in the U.S., Perego's perseverance was key in reviving Paper Tiger after financial setbacks. He stresses the importance of balancing cinema and streaming, supporting filmmakers' preferences for theatrical experiences while acknowledging streaming's role. Perego envisions a filmmaker community reminiscent of the camaraderie among past greats like Coppola and Scorsese, aiming to foster collaboration and idea exchange.
