Director Peter Jackson has opened up about the decision to replace Ryan Gosling in the 2009 film adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel, 'The Lovely Bones', following the actor's significant weight gain for the role without prior agreement.
Jackson's Explanation
Speaking at Cannes, where he received an Honorary Palme d’Or, Jackson commented on Gosling's departure, stating, “Anytime we recast an actor, it’s actually our fault because we didn’t get the casting right.” Jackson emphasized that such decisions are not due to an actor's fault but rather a mismatch in expectations.
Gosling's Perspective
Ryan Gosling had originally believed his character should weigh 210 pounds, a vision he pursued without extensive preproduction discussions. “I just showed up on set, and I had gotten it wrong. Then I was fat and unemployed,” Gosling humorously reflected in a 2010 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Cast Impressions
Saoirse Ronan, who starred in the film, revealed on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast in 2024 that the casting change happened after some initial preparation with Gosling. Ronan expressed her fondness for Gosling and his dog, George, though she understood the professional reasons behind the decision. “It’s like sometimes you’re just not on the same page,” she noted.
Mark Wahlberg Steps In
Mark Wahlberg ultimately took over the role. Ronan observed that Wahlberg, a father himself, brought a personal experience to the character that Gosling, at 27, lacked. “Mark was able to step in, and he was a father,” Ronan said.
