OpenAI has introduced a preview of personal finance tools for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the U.S., enabling them to connect their bank accounts for financial insights.
Partnering with Plaid
In collaboration with Plaid, OpenAI allows users to link accounts from over 12,000 financial institutions, such as Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. Users who connect their accounts will access a comprehensive dashboard that displays portfolio performance, spending patterns, subscriptions, and upcoming payments.
Building on Recent Acquisitions
This launch follows OpenAI's acquisition of the team behind personal finance startup Hiro in April, backed by firms like Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive. OpenAI acknowledged Hiro's financial expertise as instrumental in developing the new tool. However, it remains unclear if Hiro's team exclusively built the feature.
Using the New Finance Tools
To access the tools, users can select “Get started” under the “Finances” option in the sidebar or type “@Finances, connect my accounts” in ChatGPT. The bot then guides users through the account linking process with Plaid. OpenAI plans to include Intuit support soon, enabling tax impact analysis from stock sales and assessing credit card approval likelihoods.
More than 200 million users already query ChatGPT monthly with financial questions, and OpenAI's new GPT-5.5 model is reportedly better at contextual reasoning, crucial for finance-related inquiries. OpenAI collaborated with finance experts to establish a benchmark for improving responses to personal finance questions.
Managing Financial Connections
After connecting accounts, users can ask detailed questions about their finances, such as changes in spending habits or planning for future home purchases. Users can disconnect accounts via Settings > Apps > Finances, prompting the removal of synced data from ChatGPT after 30 days. The Finances page also allows users to view and delete financial memories.
OpenAI's introduction of finance tools aligns with a trend among AI companies to create specialized products for sensitive topics like health and finance. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have launched health-related tools, and Perplexity recently introduced its own financial research product.
Available on the web and iOS for Pro users, OpenAI's personal finance tools aim for further refinement based on feedback before expanding availability to Plus users.
