Notion Expands Workspace with AI Agent Hub

Notion has unveiled a new developer platform that turns its workspace into a hub for AI agents, enhancing capabilities for both custom and external agents, and enabling automated workflows using data from any database.

Announcing New Capabilities

In a livestreamed event on Wednesday, Notion, known for its collaborative note-taking app, announced the platform, which serves as an orchestration layer for AI work across various tools and data sources. This marks a shift from Notion's reputation as a note-taking app with AI features to a comprehensive hub for collaboration between people and AI agents.

Since February, Notion users have created over 1 million Custom Agents to handle tasks like FAQs and status updates. However, these agents had limitations, including the inability to connect with external data or use custom logic. External agents also couldn't link with Notion's workspace.

Introducing Workers and External Connections

Ivan Zhao, Notion's co-founder and CEO, acknowledged past limitations, stating, "It's true that, historically, Notion hasn't been the most developer-focused platform. But things are changing." Notion's new cloud-based environment, Workers, allows teams to deploy custom code in a secure sandbox, enabling data sync, custom tool creation, and webhook-triggered actions without external infrastructure reliance.

With Workers, developers can use AI coding agents to write the necessary code. The system utilizes the same credit system as Custom Agents, but it will be free through August for experimentation.

Syncing and Integration Features

The Notion Developer Platform also supports database syncing with any API-compatible database, allowing integration with systems like Salesforce, Zendesk, and Postgres. Zhao emphasized that users can now leverage their Notion database as a canvas for workflows and agents.

Moreover, Workers can create agent tools with custom logic when external connections via Model Context Protocol (MCP) aren't sufficient. Users can now interact with external AI agents, assign tasks, and track progress as if they were Notion's own agents. Notion supports agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Decagon, with plans to add more.

Developer Tools and Market Trends

The platform also introduces an External Agent API for connecting internal agents to Notion. Developers can access these features through the Notion CLI, available on all plans.

This move positions Notion as a programmable platform competing with workflow automation solutions. Companies increasingly seek to automate knowledge work and build internal AI systems, making Notion's integration of agents, custom code, and live data appealing.

Zhao summarized the initiative, saying, "Any data, any tool, any agent — that's the big picture for the Notion Developer Platform."
