Nithya Raman Secures Spot in L.A. Mayoral Runoff

Nithya Raman has defeated Spencer Pratt in the race for Los Angeles mayor, securing a spot in the November runoff against incumbent Karen Bass. The Associated Press declared Raman's victory on Monday after her lead grew from 3,000 to over 21,000 votes as more ballots were counted.

Raman's Surging Lead

Raman, a City Council member, saw her lead increase significantly, leaving only 8 percent of ballots, or 65,000 votes, outstanding. This led the AP to call the race in her favor, despite Pratt's initial lead with Republican ballots. As of 6 p.m. PT, Pratt had not conceded, and Raman had yet to address her supporters.

Runoff Against Bass

Raman will face Karen Bass in November, marking a contest between two former Democratic allies. The runoff will debate whether Los Angeles requires a moderate or progressive approach to tackle its numerous challenges.

Pratt's campaign, although initially strong, may have been hindered by his Republican registration in a predominantly liberal city. Despite this, he captured over 200,000 votes, highlighting significant discontent among voters and potentially paving the way for future outsider candidates.

Pratt's Future

Pratt, known for his bold remarks, expressed confidence on Election Night, anticipating a contest with Bass. His future actions remain uncertain, whether as a media commentator or in another political role.

Raman, initially considered an underdog, entered the race late, challenging Bass. Her strategy to split the Democratic vote appeared risky but ultimately proved successful, as she now prepares to challenge Bass in the runoff.
