Egyptian director Mohamed Diab, known for his work on Marvel's 'Moon Knight,' is gearing up for the wide release of his historical epic 'Asad' in the Middle East. The film stars Arab megastar Mohamed Ramadan and British-Lebanese actress Razane Jammal.
Epic Tale of Rebellion
Ramadan plays the lead in 'Asad,' a character inspired by the legendary rebel slave Spartacus. Jammal, recognized for her role in Netflix's 'The Sandman,' portrays a free woman whose relationship with Asad sparks a fierce conflict with his oppressors.
Produced by Moussa Abu Taleb's Good Fellas Media Production, 'Asad' is set for a May 14 release in Egypt, followed by a May 21 rollout across the MENA region via distributor Empire International. Abu Taleb describes the release as being on par with major Hollywood films.
Ambitious Production
Abu Taleb is in negotiations to expand 'Asad's' reach to India and China. The film, an ambitious Arab epic, features lavish action sequences and extensive production values. " ," Abu Taleb told Variety, highlighting the film's potential global appeal.
Diab's Hollywood Experience
Diab discussed returning to Egypt after working in Hollywood, emphasizing the film's thematic focus on slavery, a subject he feels is both significant and underrepresented in Arab cinema. With a $7 million budget, Diab aims to showcase the impressive production quality achievable in Egypt, comparing it to a $40 million film.
Collaboration with Mohamed Ramadan
Diab praised Ramadan's dedication, noting his commitment to the project over two years, including performing challenging stunts. After viewing the film, Diab and Ramadan agreed to personally fund an additional day of shooting, demonstrating their investment in the film's success.
Future Projects
Diab is also developing a Netflix film titled 'The Note,' inspired by his experiences in the U.S. and his reflections on the American dream. The project is currently in the scripting phase and will explore Diab's personal journey and critique of Hollywood culture.
