Laika, the studio renowned for 'Coraline' and 'ParaNorman,' presented the first teaser trailer for its upcoming stop-motion film 'Wildwood' during a press event at Cannes' Martinez Hotel on Tuesday. This marks Laika's debut film release in the 2020s, with the project having been in development since 2011 and production since 2021.
Adaptation of a Beloved Book
'Wildwood' is based on the book by Colin Meloy, illustrated by Carson Ellis. The story follows two seventh-graders who stumble upon a magical world within the forest near their Portland, Oregon home. After her baby brother Mac is taken by a murder of crows, Prue McKeel, voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, embarks on a rescue mission into the enchanted forest, accompanied by her classmate Curtis Mehlberg, voiced by Jacob Tremblay.
Stunning Visuals and Soundtrack
The trailer features the emotive track “My Tears are Becoming a Sea” by M83, as it follows Prue and Curtis deep into the Impassable Wilderness. The duo encounters magical creatures, talking animals, and bandits while being drawn into a conflict threatening the forest's balance. Fans familiar with Laika's animation style will find 'Wildwood' to be a leap in both scale and ambition.
A Star-Studded Cast
Directed by Travis Knight, 'Wildwood' features a screenplay by Chris Butler, who previously collaborated with Knight on 'Masters of the Universe' and 'Kubo and the Two Strings.' The voice cast includes notable names such as Carey Mulligan, Richard E. Grant, Awkwafina, Tom Waits, Charlie Day, Angela Bassett, and Mahershala Ali.
Release and Distribution
Produced by Travis Knight and Sam Wilson, 'Wildwood' is set for a wide release in the United States on October 23 through Fathom Entertainment. FilmNation Entertainment is managing international sales in Cannes.
