Julianne Moore's Powerful Speech at Women in Motion

Julianne Moore delivered a passionate speech on gender representation in film while accepting an award at Kering’s Women in Motion dinner during the Cannes Film Festival.

Challenging Cultural Assumptions

Moore, honored for her career and advocacy, criticized the perception that women's stories are less engaging or need male-centric elements to attract viewers. "There’s a cultural assumption, particularly in the United States, that women’s stories are less interesting or smaller," Moore stated. She questioned, "What about the female audience? What do they want to watch?"

Celebrating Female Voices

In a white silk jumpsuit, Moore declared, "I f***ing love actresses. I choose a lot of what I watch based on who I’m going to look at for two hours." She emphasized her commitment to women, sharing that her professional team and social circle are predominantly female. Moore encouraged her children to seek help from women, reinforcing her belief in women's supportive nature.

Addressing Female Invisibility

Moore challenged the idea that women become invisible with age, calling it a self-fulfilling myth. "I’m always curious about that narrative," she said, urging for more female voices in the industry. "We need more female voices in our industry, more writers, more directors, more actresses to carry that vision of what we see," she concluded to a room filled with applause.

An Evening of Glamour and Support

Salma Hayek, who established the Women in Motion event with her husband, François-Henri Pinault, mingled with guests like Demi Moore, Chloe Zhao, and Ruth Negga. Guests included Stellan Skargård, Rami Malek, and Diego Calva. Jordan Firstman's "Club Kid," featuring Calva, was recently acquired by A24 in an eight-figure deal. Firstman and Odessa A’zion, his co-star from HBO’s "I Love L.A.," were seen enjoying the music together.

Colman Domingo stood out with an ornate Boucheron octopus accessory, drawing attention and photographs from attendees. "If we can bring even more attention to supporting women in film, great!" Domingo said, explaining his bold fashion choice.
