John Travolta Honored with Cannes' Palme d'Or

John Travolta received an honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival ahead of the premiere of his directorial debut, "Propeller One-Way Night Coach." Overwhelmed by the unexpected accolade, Travolta expressed, “This is beyond the Oscar.”

Emotional Acceptance

Travolta, emotional and surprised, addressed the audience in French with “Surprise complétement!” as they responded with applause. Turning to Cannes director Thierry Fremaux, he said, “You said this would be a special night, but I didn’t know it would mean this.” Fremaux replied, “We knew!”

Travolta thanked Fremaux, recalling their November meeting: “When Thierry said it was making history because it would be the first film ever accepted that early, I cried like a baby.” He expressed gratitude for Fremaux’s discernment and support.

Film Premiere

Travolta premiered "Propeller One-Way Night Coach," an Apple-backed film based on his 1997 children’s book. The autobiographical story features a young airplane enthusiast, Jeff, played by Clark Shotwell, and his mother, portrayed by Kelly Eviston-Quinnett. Travolta's daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, also stars in the film.

Following the screening, Travolta and Fremaux discussed his passion for aviation, which began in childhood. Travolta acknowledged the emotional moment when Fremaux selected his film five months in advance, despite Apple already acquiring it.

Family Inspiration

Travolta credited his family for his artistic journey, saying, “My oldest sister, Ellen, was really this character, the lead in this film. But it’s really a mixture of my sister and my mother.” He thanked them for their influence on his dreams and expressed gratitude for their presence at the premiere.

Cannes Surprise Tradition

Prior to 2026, Cannes announced honorary Palme d'Or awards for Peter Jackson and Barbra Streisand. Cannes traditionally bestows a surprise honorary Palme annually, as seen last year when Denzel Washington received the honor before “Highest 2 Lowest” premiered.

Travolta's past Cannes appearances include screenings of “Pulp Fiction” (1994), “She’s So Lovely” (1997), and “Primary Colors” (1998). “Pulp Fiction” won the Palme d'Or, while Sean Penn won Best Actor for “She’s So Lovely.”

“Propeller One-Way Night Coach” will be available for streaming on Apple TV starting May 29.
