Jack Ryan Returns in Lackluster Prime Video Sequel

John Krasinski is back as Jack Ryan in 'Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War', now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, but the film fails to make a strong impression despite its promising premise.

Unremarkable Start

The movie opens with Ryan, now a hedge fund analyst, jogging in Manhattan before being pursued by what he believes to be enemy agents. The tension dissolves when his former CIA boss, James Greer (Wendell Pierce), emerges from the shadows with a new mission. 'Where’s the fun in that?' Greer quips when questioned about the cloak-and-dagger approach, but the scene feels like a cheap thrill.

Star-Studded Yet Lacking

  • Release Date: May 20
  • Director: Andrew Bernstein
  • Cast: John Krasinski, Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly
  • Screenwriters: Aaron Rabin, John Krasinski
  • Rated R, 1 hour 45 minutes

The central plot takes Ryan to Dubai, alongside fellow agent Mike November (Michael Kelly), to retrieve a crucial package. The narrative spins into a conspiracy with ties to a defunct black-ops program, Project Starling, and rogue MI6 agent Liam Crown (Max Beesley). Despite the chaos, Krasinski, also co-writer and executive producer, doesn't focus on character depth or significant dialogue. Greer’s exasperated 'You and your goddamn moral compass!' stands out amid extensive exposition designed for distracted viewers.

Action Without Impact

Set against international backdrops, the film features chases by foot, speedboat, and car, with key scenes in renowned locations like Trafalgar Square. However, these sequences feel more like obligatory genre fixtures than essential plot elements.

Performance and Presence

Krasinski's portrayal of Ryan is engaging but lacks the gravitas needed to anchor the story. Originally a cerebral character, Ryan has been reimagined as an action hero, yet this transformation is not compelling enough to sustain interest. For a character whose name headlines the title, Ryan often fades into the background, a detriment rather than an asset.

The film's shortcomings highlight the challenges of maintaining a successful franchise. As 'Jack Ryan: Ghost War' unfolds, it becomes clear that familiar espionage tropes and high-profile locations aren't enough to captivate audiences without a compelling narrative core.
