Interactive Map Reveals Data Center Locations

Oregon resident Isabelle Reksopuro discovered that Google is acquiring public land for its data centers, sparking her curiosity about similar issues elsewhere. "There's a lot of misinformation about data centers," Reksopuro stated, highlighting Google's denial of such claims.

Google's Operations in The Dalles

Reksopuro clarified that The Dalles, a city near the Washington state border, had sought to reclaim 150 acres of Mount Hood National Forest. The city cited the need for access to Mount Hood's watershed to support its growing population, currently 16,010 as of the 2020 census. Critics argue the city's move is to secure more water for Google's sprawling data center campus, which already consumes about one-third of the city's water supply.

Creating an Interactive Map

Reksopuro, a University of Washington student studying tech and public policy, developed an interactive map to track data centers and AI policies globally. Using data from Epoch AI and scraped legislative data, she created a user-friendly tool. "I wanted it to be something my younger sisters could explore," she said, aiming to shift opinions through the map rather than social media like TikTok.

Functionality and Public Response

The map updates four times daily using Claude, searching for new sources and verifying them against Reksopuro's database. "Once it does that, it will write a new summary, add it to the news feed, and populate it on the sidebar," Reksopuro explained. The tool reflects diverse public responses and policies regarding data centers. While Maine experienced significant backlash, Texas embraced data centers, offering over $1 billion in annual tax breaks, according to The Texas Tribune.

Transparency and Community Benefits

Reksopuro isn't opposed to data centers but believes increased transparency can empower communities. "If people knew about data centers beforehand, it would give them leverage," she said, suggesting communities could negotiate for job training, tax revenue, and environmental monitoring.

Data centers, while providing limited permanent jobs post-construction, drive up power costs, as Bloomberg reports. Still, the public response and regulatory measures vary widely across the U.S.
