Honda has unveiled the prototypes for its new hybrid models: the Accord sedan and Acura RDX SUV. These models were revealed during the company's annual business briefing and are built on a platform that is set to launch next year.
Next-Gen Hybrid System
The Acura RDX is noted as Honda's first SUV to incorporate the next-generation two-motor hybrid system. This system represents a significant step in Honda's hybrid technology evolution.
Shift in Strategy
Honda has revised its strategy, moving away from its previous goal to have one-fifth of its sales as EVs by 2030 and aiming for 100% EV and fuel cell vehicle sales by 2040. The company now plans to reallocate resources towards hybrid models, indicating a shift in focus.
- Honda plans to launch 15 next-generation hybrid models globally by March 31, 2030, primarily targeting North America, with larger models arriving in 2029.
- The next-gen hybrid system will see a cost reduction of over 30%, enhancing fuel economy by more than 10% compared to the 2023 system.
- Honda's next-gen ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) will roll out in 2028, featuring in over 15 models within five years.
- Production capacity in Ohio will pivot to support gas and hybrid vehicles, with a collaboration with LG to convert EV battery lines to hybrid battery production.
- The company plans to expand its EV lineup in Japan, starting with an electric N-BOX minicar in 2028.
Financial Adjustments and Future Plans
In March, Honda announced a write-down of up to 2.5 trillion yen ($15.7 billion) related to EV investments. The company expects to resolve these EV-related losses by 2029 and will reassess its EV plans in 2030.
