Google Introduces Custom Widget Creation for Android

Google announced a new 'Create My Widget' feature for Android on Tuesday, enabling users to create custom widgets through natural language input. This feature will debut on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this summer.

Widget Creation with Natural Language

The 'Create My Widget' feature allows users to describe their desired widget using everyday language. For instance, asking for “three high-protein meal prep recipes every week” generates a custom dashboard. This widget can be added and resized on the home screen, providing personalized content.

For specific needs, such as a cyclist focused on wind speed and rain, users can create a weather widget displaying only those statistics. The feature leverages Google's AI capabilities to tailor information to user preferences.

Integration with Google Apps

Google's Gemini technology integrates with the 'Create My Widget' feature, allowing it to pull information from the web and connect with Google apps like Gmail and Calendar. This integration can create a personalized dashboard for various activities. Planning a family reunion in Berlin? The widget can compile flight and hotel details, restaurant reservations, and even a countdown to the event.

AI Driving Customization

This launch marks Google's effort to embed generative AI further into the Android ecosystem, amid a broader push by tech companies to make customization tools more user-friendly. Ben Greenwood, Director of Product Management for Android Core Experiences, stated, “This is like you asking your personal assistant a question, and having them just bring you the answer on repeat.”

Greenwood added that the feature opens up numerous use cases by allowing access to both global knowledge and personal data. This development is part of the company's unveiling of Gemini Intelligence, which will also introduce advanced autofill and an AI-powered voice dictation feature for Gboard.

The 'Create My Widget' feature is a significant step in making Android devices more adaptable to individual user needs, providing a personalized tech experience.
