Elon Musk has once again commented on Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, agreeing with a far-right journalist's criticism of Lupita Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy.
Nolan's Epic Film
Set for a July release, Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey features a star-studded cast with Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and Zendaya as Athena. Despite the anticipation, the film has faced scrutiny, particularly around its casting choices.
Musk and Walsh's Comments
On Tuesday, Matt Walsh, a conservative commentator, criticized Nyong’o’s role, claiming Nolan would be labeled racist if he cast a white actress. Musk responded with a simple “True.” The exchange continued on Wednesday, with Walsh suggesting a white actress like Sydney Sweeney should have been cast, claiming there would be outrage if a film set in Africa featured a white woman in a similar role. Musk agreed, calling Hollywood hypocritical.
Previous Reactions
This isn’t the first time Musk has reacted to the film. Earlier, he criticized rumors of Elliot Page being cast as Achilles, calling it “one of the dumbest and most twisted things I’ve ever heard.” Musk has a public history of controversial statements, including those involving his trans daughter.
Industry Response
Representatives for Musk and Nyong’o have not commented on the posts. Nolan’s representative referred inquiries to Universal Entertainment, which declined to comment on Musk’s statements or confirm Page’s role. Nyong’o’s representatives have not responded to requests for comment.
Walsh, known for his documentaries What Is a Woman? and Am I Racist?, dismissed accusations of racism, stating he doesn't care about such labels. The debate highlights ongoing tensions in Hollywood over diversity and representation.
